Any sailors out there? I have a spinaker that came w/ my 26 foot sailboat. I am now buying a 30 foot boat.?
Since the spinaker flies freely attached only w/ a halyard & not on the boom or up the mask, would it be possible to use it on the 30 foot boat? I don't want to include it w/ the 26 foot boat when I sell it if I can use it on the 30 foot boat. I don't think they make spinakers specific to one sixe boat. There should be a range; ie: 25 to 30 & 30 to 35 etc. Anyone know for sure?
You can easily use it as small spinnaker. We used one from a 23 foot on our 30. They do make spinnakers specific to boats. Call Atlantic Sail Traders and discuss it. They also buy usd sails and sell them.They have a computer program with each makke in it and all the sail sizes.

Working out what size spinnaker you can carry in all but heavy weather is very easy. The only dimensions needed are the height of the mast and the distance from the foot of the mast to the forestay. Hoist a tape measure to the top of the mast with the spinnaker halyard. Remember to tie a line to the halyard in case your tape breaks. Measure down to the top of the working deck, not the cabin top. This is your mast dimension. Lower the tape measure. Now measure from where the forestay connects at the bow, back to the base of the mast.
If you are racing, most PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) organizations limit the maximum luff length of a spinnaker to the mast height. The maximum foot dimension is 180% of the mast foot to forestay dimension.
If you don’t want to race, there is a lot more flexibility to the size your spinnaker. The luff length should be within 10% of the mast height above deck. The foot dimension can be anything, but ideally it should be from 160% to 200% of the mast foot to forestay dimension.
Since you are moving to a larger boat, your spinnaker may be under-powered, but it won’t be too big. You can always get another later after learning from this one

Well, it’s "OK" but if you are seeking beam to downwind performance it isn’t going to give it to you. If you are looking to get your 30 surfing, it is unlikely the smaller spinnaker will do it, except in a blow you wouldn’t want to be out in anyway.
Appearance wise it will look like a spinnaker for a smaller boat . . . at least to a somewhat trained eye. Adding 4′ to a boat is not "linear" …. there is a substantial increase in forces with the added sail area and hence the heavier rigging, sheets, winches, etc.,in a 30 compared to a 26.
Spinnakers are cut to specific dimensions and specific size boats. There is no "range".
